Judgment Day

This transcript is dedicated to the memory of Kevin Smith.

TEASER

Hercules and Serena come out of their home.

SERENA
Oh! I'm so excited!

HERCULES
Serena, we're only going to the marketplace.

SERENA
I know, but, I could never do this before, not
without fear of being touched and turning back
into the Hind. This is such a great feeling of freedom.

HERCULES
I'm glad you're happy.

SERENA
Are you?

HERCULES
Absolutely.

SERENA
No regrets.

HERCULES
Well, no. No regrets.

SERENA
We could always go in later.

HERCULES
Yeah, except Iolaus is waiting for us, and
we stood him up yesterday.

SERENA
But it is our honeymoon.

HERCULES
Good point.

Hercules picks up Serena.

SERENA
Wait, wait, wait, it would be rude. I mean Iolaus
did help with the house, and-

HERCULES
Yeah.

SERENA
Well we can come back early.

HERCULES
You've created a monster. We'll come back early.

They leave.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena and Gabrielle sit in a tavern. Strife and Ares are there, but they are disguised as two bar flies, Area is Drunk #1 and Strife is Drunk #2.

DRUNK #1
I still can't believe it! Hercules getting married!

DRUNK #2
Yeah.

DRUNK #1
And to a deer, no less.

XENA
Excuse me. Did you say Hercules got married?

DRUNK #2
To the Golden Hind, last of her kind!

DRUNK #1
Yeah, I heard he gave up all his powers to marry
her. She must be something.

DRUNK #2
Yeah.

XENA
Come on, Gabrielle.

GABRIELLE
Okay.

DRUNK #2
I can see it now, he comes home and says,
"Deer, I'm home."

DRUNK #1
"Deer, I'm home."

DRUNK #2
Bought you a salt lick for your birthday.

DRUNK #1
"Salt lick"!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena leaves the tavern, followed by Gabrielle.

GABRIELLE
I know. It's that Hercules didn't tell you. That's
what's upsetting you.

XENA
Gabrielle.

GABRIELLE
Xena, you know, you shouldn't bottle up your
emotions. Now, if there's some sort of hurt or
ealousy operating here, then get it out.

XENA
Gabrielle!

Drunk #1 and Drunk #2 come out.

DRUNK #1
"Deer, I'm home"! You're too much!

GABRIELLE
Oh, great. Just walk away from me. What am I,
talking to myself here?

Xena and Gabrielle head out. The Drunks morph into Ares and Strife.

ARES
Strife, I think you set my little plan in action.
Well done.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The marketplace.

EXTRA
Get your fabric right here.

SERENA
Huh, look.

EXTRA
Check that out!

EXTRA
Let me take a better look at you!

SERENA
Let's just keep moving.

EXTRA
Hey, how about a kiss?

HEAD SOLDIER
That's one prime piece of venison.

HERCULES
Excuse me, but that's my wife you're talking about.

SERENA
Just ignore them, Hercules.

HEAD SOLDIER
Bet she's nice to snuggle up to in the winter, all
that soft deer fur.

HERCULES
Ah, fellas, look, I'm in a good mood today. So,
why don't you just apologize, and we'll go on our
separate ways.

HEAD SOLDIER
Now, why would we do that? Especially since
you lost your strength.

HERCULES
Yeah, well, at least I haven't lost my manners.

SERENA
Let's just go find Iolaus.

HERCULES
Serena, I can handle this myself.

SERENA
Hercules!

The Head Soldier attacks and Hercules punches him.

HERCULES
What do you gotta rock for a head? Of course,
he does.

The soldiers attack.

HEAD SOLDIER
How does if feel to be like the rest of us?

EXTRA
He doesn't have the strength.

HEAD SOLDIER
Now, which part of you shall I break first?

Hercules is held, and the Head Soldier holds a mace over his head.

END OF TEASER

ACT ONE

Iolaus runs in, and helps. Hercules and Iolaus take care of the soldiers, with Serena lending a hand, hitting a soldier in the head with a pot.

HERCULES
Ow. Now, about that apology.

HEAD SOLDIER
Sorry.

SERENA
Are you all-

HERCULES
I said I could take care of this myself.

SERENA
But-

IOLAUS
You're welcome.

SERENA
We were just trying-

HERCULES
When I say I don't need any help, I don't need
any help! Unless you two don't think I'm up
to this anymore!

He storms off.

SERENA
I thought, may-

IOLAUS
I've never seen him like that. Herc, wait up!

They follow him. Strife walks in front of Hercules, unseen.

IOLAUS
Herc! Wait!

HERCULES
Ah! Don't you ever, ever doubt me again!
I might not have all my strength, but I'm not some
helpless, impotent old man who can't fight his
own battles!

SERENA
What is wrong with you?!

HERCULES
Nothing! Nothing has changed!

Strife disappears.

IOLAUS
Hercules, are you all right?

HERCULES
I'm...I don't know what got into me.

SERENA
I was worried about you.

HERCULES
I know.

IOLAUS
I've never seen you get so angry over-

HERCULES
I'm sorry. I...

SERENA
Ah, sweetheart. It's okay.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old battlefield. Ares and Strife move along.

ARES
And?

STRIFE
I got old Hercules coming and going.

ARES
Good, next step is to get him going, going, gone.

STRIFE
No sweat. I haven't even hit him in dreamland
yet. Um, just, about payment...

ARES
Hey, don't worry. You'll be amply rewarded.

STRIFE
I--I just...I mean, if I could just--just get a hint. I
mean, I certainly don't expect to get into your
category, but, uh, maybe, you know, if I was, say
God of...Skirmishes.

He laughs.

STRIFE
That was a joke. Dig?

Ares' laughs.

ARES
Dig Hercules' grave. And learn how to
talk so I can understand you. You gotta learn to
relax more, Strife. Savour the moments of existence.
Example: this is the site of one of my greatest
triumphs, the battle of Torrence. Ten thousand
corpses littered the battleground. The stench
was...invigorating.

STRIFE
So, uh, who was the great general responsible
for this...aroma?

ARES
No general, it was a warrior. Xena. She led her
army through opponents' infantry like flies. Limbs
were scattered everywhere. It was beautiful.

STRIFE
You miss her, don'tcha? It's a shame she
decided to change sides.

ARES
I wouldn't give up on her just yet. Death's perfume
can be very...addictive. Let's just see how my
game plan unfolds.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a tavern.

IOLAUS
Hercules, you need your privacy, hmm? I'm
gonna go fishing for a few days, or at least 'til
your honeymoon's over.

HERCULES
Oh, you're gonna be long that long, are you?

IOLAUS
Well, you're not planning a six month honeymoon,
are you?

SERENA
Mmm, we were thinking more in terms of forever.

Iolaus laughs.

IOLAUS
Okay, well I'm gonna get an early start tomorrow.

HERCULES
Well, why don't you stop by for breakfast? I mean,
it's on the way.

IOLAUS
I'm leaving at dawn.

SERENA
That's all right. We'll be up.

HERCULES
Yeah.

SERENA
Come as early as you like. Iolaus.

IOLAUS
Okay, but only for a quick visit, all right?

HERCULES
Okay.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Outside. The villagers are gathered. Strife is among them.

HEAD ELDER
I want to remind all of you to come to our town
meeting tomorrow night. We'll be discussing
the formal dedication of our new water cistern
to Hercules.

Strife hits a man with a bolt.

AGITATOR
Just a minute! Don't you realize the trouble you'll
be bringing on yourself by doing something
like that?

HEAD ELDER
But, Hercules is a friend of ours. He helped us
build that cistern.

AGITATOR
And what has he done for you lately? Married a
creature that is half-human, half-animal! The
gods can't be pleased with that!

HEAD ELDER
Hercules isn't hurting anyone. And nothing bad
has happened to any of us yet.

AGITATOR
Oh? What happened in the marketplace today?
Think that's the last incident like that we'll see?
Every young punk from here to Hellespont
will be showing up to challenge Hercules to
test his strength!

EXTRA
That's right!

HEAD ELDER
What do you suggest we do?

AGITATOR
Go to him. Tell him to leave. Take our town back
before it's too late!

HEAD ELDER
What do you think?

EXTRA
He makes a good point

HEAD ELDER
Maybe, he's right. We'll talk to Hercules, first
thing in the morning.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hercules and Serena are in bed.

SERENA
You know-

HERCULES
Hmm?

SERENA
If you wanna go fishing with Iolaus, I'm a big girl.
I can take care of myself.

HERCULES
Hmm, well, maybe we should all go.

SERENA
You know what Iolaus says about three's a crowd.

HERCULES
So is two as far as fishing and Iolaus is concerned.
He'll have a better time by himself.

SERENA
Hmm, I just don't want you to change your lifestyle
because of me. I--I know how you help people,
the adventures you go on. I don't wanna upset that.

HERCULES
You won't. It's just a matter of balancing what I
do out there, and what I do at home with my family.

SERENA
"Family"?

HERCULES
Oh, yeah.

SERENA
I love you so much.

HERCULES
Well, you're pretty and smart.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Strife dances outside.

STRIFE
Ah-hah. Hey, Cousin Morpheus, throw Herc a dream.
Shake up a wild one; make him yell and scream.
Shake up a wild one; make him yell and scream.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hercules dreams about what happened in the village that day.

HERCULES (voice-over)
Don't you ever, ever, doubt me again! I might
not have all my strength, but I'm not some helpless,
impotent old man who can't fight his own battles!

SERENA (voice-over)
What is wrong with you?!

HERCULES (voice-over)
Nothing!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The dream.

HERCULES
Nothing has changed!

SERENA
If nothing's changed, then how come you let that
soldier back there almost brain you?!

HERCULES
I can take care of myself!

SERENA
And me?! Can you take care of me like you did
your first family?!

HERCULES
Don't talk about them.

SERENA
I gave up everything for you! I was the last of my
kind! And now -- and now I can't protect myself!
And you, you gave up your strength. You
can't protect me! How am I supposed to feel?!

HERCULES
I am warning you!

SERENA
Oh, go ahead, hit me. Hit me! Oh, show me what
a strong man you are!

Hercules holds up his fist and yells.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hercules awakes. He sits up, and finds blood on his hands.

HERCULES
Blood.

Hercules finds a knife in his bed.

HERCULES
Serena?

Serena has been stabbed. She's dead.

END OF ACT ONE

ACT TWO

Iolaus walks by the group of villagers, heading for Hercules' house.

IOLAUS
Morning!

HERCULES
No!

Iolaus hears Hercules, and runs to his home.

IOLAUS
Herc. Herc?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iolaus runs into Hercules' home to see Hercules cradling the dead Serena.

IOLAUS
Hercules?

HERCULES
Uh, a pillow. I, uh, I need a pillow. She's--she's
uncomfortable.

IOLAUS
Hercules. Hercules, she's dead.

HERCULES
No, she-

The villagers run in.

AGITATOR
Murderer!

HEAD ELDER
You killed her!

Hercules runs at them, but Iolaus holds him back.

HERCULES
No!

IOLAUS
Wait a minute! Take it easy!

HERCULES
Get 'em out of here!

IOLAUS
He doesn't know what he's saying.

HERCULES
Go! Get 'em out! Get 'em out! Get out! Go!

The villagers leave. Iolaus looks at Hercules.

HERCULES
Go!

Iolaus leaves too.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ares touches a thread.

ARES
Ah, the three Fates. Clotho spins the thread of
life. My dear Lachesis measures it. And my
dearest Atropos cuts it.

ATROPOS
That is Hercules' life line. Another god can't kill
him. And he's protected by Zeus.

ARES
Oh, no more. He sinned against the gods. He's
killed a mortal in cold blood.

Atropos gets ready to cut it. Zeus appears.

ZEUS
Wait!

ARES
Zeus.

ZEUS
Who gave you permission?

ARES
This has already been dealt with. The other
gods have voted.

ZEUS
And I wasn't informed?

ARES
You were unreachable, off on one of your
dalliances, I suspect.

ZEUS
I can't believe my son killed anyone in cold blood.

ARES
He's gone mad. See for yourself.

Ares' makes a bubble appear, showing Hercules tearing up his home.

ZEUS
If he's guilty, he'll be punished, but not by
you. Bring him in before the Olympians.

ARES
Shouldn't he be tried among mortals, now that
he is one; completely?

ZEUS
Then you better make sure he lives to see a
fair trial.

ARES
It's out of my hands. What if he refuses to give
himself up? He's your son, you know how
stubborn he can be.

Zeus disappears.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hercules has covered Serena.

IOLAUS
What're you gonna do?

HERCULES
I have to find the magistrate, tell him what happened.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Outside.

IOLAUS
Herc, I don't think this is such a good idea. I
mean, I've just come from town, and they're
forming a lynch mob.

HERCULES
A lynch mob? What, for me?

IOLAUS
I know you didn't kill her, but-

HERCULES
Maybe I did.

IOLAUS
What?

HERCULES
I'm not sure what happened in there, you see.
I've had these dreams. I mean, I keep seeing
myself-

EXTRA
There he is!

EXTRA
There's the murderer!

EXTRA
He'll pay for what he's done!

The mob comes.

IOLAUS
Listen, you better get out of here. I'll try and talk
some sense into them.

HERCULES
I'm not gonna-

IOLAUS
Herc, you've got to go!
Hercules leaves.

IOLAUS
Okay let's, let's take it easy, fellas. Come on,
let--let's think about this for a second. I mean-

EXTRA
Out of the way, shorty!

EXTRA
You can't protect the murderer!

Iolaus is pushed aside. Iolaus mounts a horse.

IOLAUS
Yah! Come on! Come on! Come on! Get up!
Come on!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The villagers move along.

EXTRA
He'll pay for it.

EXTRA
Watch out for the trees.

Iolaus gets in the way.

EXTRA
Get out of the way!

HEAD ELDER
You are obstructing justice!

AGITATOR
Out of our way!

IOLAUS
Look, you can't just hunt him down like some
common criminal. This is Hercules you're
going after.

HEAD ELDER
I'm afraid he's not the Hercules we knew. You
saw with your own two eyes, just like we did!

EXTRA
Step aside! Hercules is a killer! Hercules must
be brought to justice!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hercules moves through the village. A door opens.

VEKLOS
Ps-s-st! Hercules. Over here.

HERCULES
Who are you?

VEKLOS
My name is Veklos. You might not remember,
but you once saved my life. You can hide in here.

HERCULES
I've never hid from anything before in my life. I'm
not about to start now.

VEKLOS
Well, it was different then. You had...look, those
people are out for blood. Please, let me help
you, just until things settle down.

EXTRA
Let's check this way!

Hercules enters.

HERCULES
Thanks.

EXTRA
Let's check the marketplace!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iolaus moves with the mob.

AGITATOR
You saw the argument he had with his wife,
his anger!

IOLAUS
Hercules is not himself at the moment. The
gods could be behind this!

HEAD ELDER
Ah, that's my point! Maybe they've driven him mad!

AGITATOR
It doesn't matter who's responsible! He's
become a danger to the community!

IOLAUS
Okay, I am going with you. He'll listen to me. If
I talk to him, I can maybe convince him to give
himself up!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Veklos' home.

HERCULES
You're taking a big chance, helping me. They
think I'm a murderer.

EXTRA
Check all the houses! He's got to be around
here, someplace!

VEKLOS
I don't know whether you are or not. I only know,
once you helped me. I'd like to return the favour.

EXTRA
Open up!

EXTRA
He's a murderer!

AGITATOR
I'm looking for Hercules. Have you seen him?

VEKLOS
He ran by earlier, and then headed back toward
the woods.

The Agitator looks around.

EXTRA
Get him! Search everywhere!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Outside.

AGITATOR
Keep searching. He couldn't have disappeared
into thin air.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hercules holds Serena's wedding bracelet.

HERCULES
Why? Why?

VEKLOS
With grief like that, you couldn't have killed her.

HERCULES
Thank you. I should get going.

VEKLOS
But you're safe here.

HERCULES
I need find out who killed my wife.

VEKLOS
Then go. But trust no one.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hercules sneaks out of the house.

HEAD ELDER
We must search the town again. He can't have
gone far.

Strife sees Hercules. Strife laughs, and uses his powers to make the Agitator see him. The villagers chase him.

AGITATOR
There he goes! Get him! Come on, he went this
way! We've got him now!

EXTRA
Behind you!

EXTRA
He's getting away!

The villagers and soldiers fight Hercules. He gets an arrow in the shoulder, and then they all attack again.

EXTRA
He's wounded!

EXTRA
Close in men!

EXTRA
Surround him!

IOLAUS
Hercules!

EXTRA
What do you think you're doing?!

Iolaus runs in.

IOLAUS
Hercules!

EXTRA
Get up!

They are surrounded and beaten.

END OF ACT TWO

ACT THREE

Hercules and Iolaus are still getting beaten, when Xena's ululation is heard. Her chakram comes flying in, breaking weapons. Xena flips in.

EXTRA
It's Xena! It's the Warrior Princess!

Xena and Gabrielle join the battle, and the four fight. Strife watches, laughing.

EXTRA
That's Xena!

Hercules is getting beaten up. The attackers are defeated, but Hercules falls back into Iolaus' arms, unconscious.

IOLAUS
Herc?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
At a cave. Xena tends to Hercules' wounds.

IOLAUS
He's in really bad shape. I've never seen him
take a beating like this.

XENA
We need more water and bandages. Hurry.

GABRIELLE
I'll be right back.

Gabrielle leaves.

XENA
The bleeding's stopped. His other shoulder is
dislocated. And he may have fractured his skull.
He should not be moved.

IOLAUS
It's a good thing you came along when you did.

XENA
I came as soon as I heard. Is it true? About him
losing his powers.

IOLAUS
Yeah.

XENA
He must love her very much.

IOLAUS
He did.

XENA
"Did"?

IOLAUS
Serena, his wife, she's dead. And the
townspeople think he did it.

HERCULES
Serena, it's my fault.

IOLAUS
I gotta go and help Gabrielle.

Iolaus leaves.

HERCULES
I've killed her. I've killed her.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gabrielle gets water. Iolaus comes out.

GABRIELLE
Iolaus, are you okay?

IOLAUS
Yeah.

GABRIELLE
Look, Iolaus, Hercules'll be okay. Xena is-

IOLAUS
It's not that.

GABRIELLE
What is it?

IOLAUS
Hercules, thinks he may have killed Serena. I
saw Hercules with a--a bloody knife in his hand,
over the body.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inside the cave. Hercules has regained consciousness.

XENA
I'm sorry about Serena.

HERCULES
She was the most beautiful woman. I didn't
think I could ever love anyone like that again.

He looks at Xena.

HERCULES
I...

XENA
It's all right. We're long past the time when we
could've been together. Tell me about what
happened.

HERCULES
I'm not sure. I...when I woke up, she was--she
was lying next to me, and I-

XENA
She was murdered in bed right next to you and
you didn't wake up?

HERCULES
It doesn't make sense. It wasn't like any
sleep I ever had. The dreams, I just-

XENA
What do you mean? Like nightmares?

HERCULES
No, it was worse. It was violent. It was so violent.
Just...like they were from the gods.

XENA
Maybe they were.

HERCULES
But why? I gave them my strength. I gave them
what they asked for.

XENA
And they're always known for keeping their
promises, right?

Hercules gets up a bit.

XENA
Hey.

HERCULES
This smells of Ares. It's my fault. I never should
have trusted him to keep his word. I need to--to
find out what part Ares played in this, and what
part I played.

Hercules starts to get up, but Xena holds him back.

XENA
You will, but get well. You still have
time to figure this out.

HERCULES
Yeah.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gabrielle enters. Hercules is asleep.

GABRIELLE
Xena.

XENA
What? What's the matter?

GABRIELLE
It's Iolaus. I've never seen him like this before.
He's--he's confused; he's torn.

XENA
I'll go talk to him.

She looks at Hercules.

XENA
Keep an eye on him. That head injury still
worries me.

GABRIELLE
What's in this goatskin?

XENA
Hopefully, something to save his life.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iolaus throws stones in the river. Xena joins him.

XENA
I never did thank you for taking care of Gabrielle.
Thank you. She's worried about you. She says
you seem upset.

IOLAUS
My best friend falls in love, breaks up our
partnership, and his wife gets killed, and he's
not sure he didn't do it. What's to be upset
about? It happens every day.

XENA
Have you ever considered that the gods might
be behind this, all of it?

IOLAUS
Yes, of course, so the gods are behind it or are
responsible for it. So what?

XENA
What are you saying?

IOLAUS
Look, I know Hercules, his sense of justice, his
sense of honour. If he thought there was a remote
chance he killed Serena, he would turn himself
in and spend the rest of his life rotting in prison.

XENA
Yes, he would. And?

IOLAUS
And be remembered throughout history, not as
a--a fighter for justice, but as a--as a wife-killer.
And then everything he stood for, everything
he fought for, goes down the river, along
with his reputation. He doesn't deserve that.

XENA
No, he doesn't. So what do you wanna do about it?

IOLAUS
I don't know. I've tried to think of something.
I've even considered confessing to Serena's
murder myself, to spare him the shame and
humiliation of imprisonment.

XENA
He'd never let you do that.

IOLAUS
I know, unless...

XENA
Unless, what?

IOLAUS
Unless I kill him first.

XENA
You haven't got the stomach for it. He's
your best friend, you couldn't do it.

IOLAUS
And you could?

XENA
If I had to. If there was no other way. I know
you're confused. But the gods are at work
here. All I'm asking is that you hear me out, and
then you can do whatever you think is right.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hercules has a nightmare about him killing Serena.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hercules awakes.

GABRIELLE
Hercules, it's all right. It's all right, just lie down.
It's okay.

HERCULES
If I did it, I couldn't live with myself.

GABRIELLE
I'll get you some water, okay?

Gabrielle leaves, and Hercules gets up. He looks at Xena's sword, and then picks it up. He takes it and leaves.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iolaus, Xena and Gabrielle enter the cave.

IOLAUS
Hercules?

XENA
Gabrielle, where's Hercules?

GABRIELLE
I don't know. I just went to get some water.

IOLAUS
I was afraid of this. He's gonna turn himself in.

GABRIELLE
Xena, he took your sword.

XENA
To fall on?

IOLAUS
No, he wouldn't do that. But he might wanna do
the next best thing. Charge into overwhelming odds.

XENA
And die a warrior's death. We've gotta stop him.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ares and Strife stand in front of the threads.

ARES
I gotta hand it to you, Strife. This has worked
out better than I could ever have imagined.

STRIFE
It's been fun.

ARES
Fun is good. So is dead.

He strums a thread and hums. Strife pulls out a knife.

END OF ACT THREE

ACT FOUR

Hercules enters the village.

EXTRA
He's wounded! He must be holding up
somewhere close.

HERCULES
If you're looking for me, here I am.

EXTRA
He's here. It's him. He's come back.

Iolaus, Xena and Gabrielle enter.

IOLAUS
I wouldn't celebrate just yet.

XENA
You've got short memories. Stay back unless
you want more of what we gave you before.

EXTRA
Better do as she says.

Hercules moves forward, but Iolaus stands in front of him.

IOLAUS
No, stop.

HERCULES
Out of my way, Iolaus. I'm turning myself in.

IOLAUS
I can't let you do that, Hercules.

EXTRA
Stay out of the way.

HERCULES
Get out of my way.

IOLAUS
Look, you're not listening to reason.

HERCULES
I'm warning you! Don't try to stop me from
doing the right thing!

IOLAUS
The right thing is to go back with us 'til we find
out who really killed Serena.

HERCULES
We know who killed her! Now, step aside!

IOLAUS
Just put the sword down.

Hercules and Iolaus fight. Iolaus stabs Hercules and blood flows from the injury.

HERCULES
You killed me.

Hercules falls down dead.

IOLAUS
No, I--I didn't mean-

XENA
No! Get up! Get up!

Xena fights Iolaus. Xena kills Iolaus and faces the villagers.

XENA
You wanna see some more blood?

EXTRA
No.

EXTRA
No.

XENA
Bring it on.

ARES
Well done, Xena.

He laughs.

XENA
Ares, what're you doing here?

ARES
Let's just say I have a vested interest in all of this.

XENA
You planned all of this.

ARES
One must keep amused. There is a way to bring
him back. Come back to me, where you belong.

XENA
How'd you do it? How did you get someone so
noble and so strong to kill his own wife?

ARES
I think I'll keep that my little secret.

STRIFE
I think you're being a little too modest there,
Uncle. It was easy, you know? A little Morpheus
induced sleep, and I just sort of slipped on by.

XENA
You killed her.

STRIFE
Yeah, like I said, it was easy.

ARES
What does it matter who killed her?! Hercules
is dead, and you're mine.

HERCULES
It matters to me.

Hercules and Iolaus get up.

EXTRA
Hercules is alive.

Hercules pulls out the goat skin and throws it to the ground.

HERCULES
Goat skin worked.

Hercules fights Strife.

HERCULES
Get up!

STRIFE
Help.

ARES
Fight him, you pathetic little fool. You're a god.
Use your powers!

Strife starts to beat up Hercules.

STRIFE
Yeah!

Hercules is not match for Strife.

STRIFE
Take a hike.

XENA
Even it up, Ares. Give Hercules back his strength.

ARES
No, I'm enjoying this too much.

The fight continues. Hercules getting beaten up.

IOLAUS
You reneged on your deal, Ares. You said if hereneged
gave up his powers, he'd be happily married.

ARES
I lied. So what?

He laughs. The fight continues. Strife jumps on Hercules' chest. Veklos enters.

VEKLOS
Ares, you heard them. Play fair.

Strife stops jumping on Hercules. Hercules takes Veklos' hand, and he's given his powers back. Veklos morphs into Zeus.

HERCULES
Father. Strife, I'm back.

Hercules starts to beat up Strife.

STRIFE
Uncle!

Ares shoots Hercules with a lightning bolt. Strife disappears.

HERCULES
Ares! This isn't over yet!

ARES
No, it isn't.

He laughs and disappears. Zeus walks away. Hercules follows.

HERCULES
Zeus! Zeus! Don't you walk away from me.

ZEUS
You handled yourself well.

HERCULES
Is that all you have to say to me?

ZEUS
You have a strange way of showing gratitude.

HERCULES
For what?

ZEUS
For saving you. For giving you back your powers!

HERCULES
I would--I would rather have Serena back.

ZEUS
Son, you know I can't undo what the gods
have done.

HERCULES
I don't wanna hear about the other gods! I mean,
this is--this is twice, now, you've turned your back
on me and my family.

ZEUS
It's not that easy. I have other responsibilities.

HERCULES
Since when have you been responsible for
anything? When?

ZEUS
So, I don't even rate a thank you.

HERCULES
Thanks, but you're wrong if you think that's gonna
change anything between us.

Hercules walks away. Zeus disappears.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena, Gabrielle and Iolaus wait for Hercules.

XENA
You give a good scream.

IOLAUS
Well, let me show you something.

He shows Xena a knick on his side.

XENA
Very nice.

IOLAUS
You cut it pretty close.

GABRIELLE
Well, it had to look real.

IOLAUS
Another couple of centimeters, it would've
been real.

XENA
Yeah, well it wasn't.

Hercules enters.

IOLAUS
Hercules?

HERCULES
Don't ask.

IOLAUS
Hey, glad you're okay.

HERCULES
I'm not okay.

IOLAUS
Look, it isn't much consolation, but at least you
know you didn't kill Serena.

HERCULES
I did kill her. If I hadn't fallen in love and married
her, she'd be alive today.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena sings "Burial." Hercules slams Serena's wedding bracelet into her headstone. Xena, Gabrielle and Iolaus leave.

HERCULES
You weren't long for this world, Serena, at least
not in your mortal form. But you made the most
of your short life. You loved, and you were loved
in return. That's the highest place a mortal can
aspire to. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
I...I will miss you.
